A Concept Artist visualizes characters, environments, props and more through storytelling. This type of artist is often tasked with working from previous designs, visualizing scenes from a book that will be made into a film, or creating new worlds and characters from scratch.

Many Concept Artists will start with detailed direction. They will take that direction and work freeform, coming up with visualizations however they work best. Most concept artists will draw digitally by hand in Photoshop , while some may work in a 3d software like ZBrush to block out shapes and forms.

This step will more than likely involve some in-depth research, especially when designing more complex things like characters or architecture.

Once the first pass is done, the concept artist will get feedback either in the form of notes or a draw over. This is when a supervisor may circle things that need changing and write what those changes are. They may even draw an outline of the exact change they would like to see. The process of a video game concept artist is quite similar to that of someone creating movie concept art.

Some concept artists specialize, while others are more generalized. For example, you may be a concept artist that primarily does work on designing mechanical robots. Though you may be a very impressive mechanical robot artist, the job market may not offer too many jobs focused only in that realm. But the fundamental process is still the same. Everything you see in a video game or animated film had to be designed by a concept artist. This includes weapons, props, vehicles, characters, clothes, buildings, interiors, you name it.

A concept artist has to create new ideas frequently based on certain creative briefs, and the work has to be done fast. The art director or creative director brings a brief to the artist. Then the concept artist starts thumbnailing rough ideas.

They might create 2, 20, or thumbnails. But this is the exploration phase which is the most important part. The best artists include a front view, back view, and profile view of the character to offer all angles for the design. They might even include some action shots of the character jumping, lunging forward, or swinging a weapon. It is used to capture and convey the overall design vision of a project before anything goes into production, versus trying to express everything in specific terms at the very beginning of design development.

Concept art can be used in animated or even live-action films, video games and comic books. It is particularly helpful in introducing new ideas into existing projects, or even to help quickly convey the direction of an entirely new project.

This is a great time for artists, animators and video game designers to be alive. For the first time in history, just about anything you can imagine or envision can be expressed visually. Any new world, any re-imagination of the laws of physics, any lifeform; if you think it, you can probably create a visual representation of it.

Now lots of cash gets plowed into getting hundreds, maybe even thousands of people, in locations around the world, to make your idea come to life in a film or video game. But your initial concept art only helps to convey the setting, mood and tone of the overall story.
