It drives like a typical light SUV, easy to maneuver with its electric power steering. The suspension has enough antisway equipment that it does not feel dangerous when going around a corner, but it clearly has limits.
This suspension is rigid enough to keep the car from bouncing around, but pliant enough to reasonably absorb bumps. The Highlander Limited's standard four-wheel drive is good for some slippery conditions, but won't handle hard-core off-roading. Toyota programs in descent control and snow modes, but keep clear of boulders, as the clearance is only moderate.
In sum The Toyota Highlander Limited lacks any cutting-edge cabin tech, instead relying on the tried and true. The navigation system works reasonably well, and shows traffic information.
The audio system offers a good number of sources, and the Bluetooth phone system does its job. There isn't much in the way of driver assistance, except for the rearview camera, and that is featureless. The availability of a rear-seat entertainment system helps out the Highlander's cabin tech score. For performance, the engine, transmission, and suspension are all basically good, but Toyota does not exploit newer technology that could lead to better mileage. The electric power steering is one advanced feature, and the Highlander gets extra credit for its four-wheel-drive system.
The Highlander isn't much for looks, just a basic SUV shape that doesn't really shout out the Toyota brand. But it earns points for practicality, with easy access to seating and good cargo space. Where it stumbles a bit is the design of the cabin tech interface, mostly for the lack of integration between the navigation unit and the car.

Dealer replaced rear lift window seal and replaced back door switch. The repair was fairly expensive. Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks. Seems to be a poor design on V6 engines. Have not heard about the problem on 4 cylinders". Smoke was observed swirling behind. I exited the highway and stopped then observed oil dripping from engine.
Had Highlander towed to repair shop. Vehicle was out of warranty. Repair shop advised that Toyota had published an advisory and offered improved oil line kit but there was no recall or warranty coverage. It is old and began to leak. Turned out a rubber hose leading from the engine to cool the oil. It's known to burst and cause the engine to seize up. Ended up replacing hose with a metal one".
Unable to drive and needed tow to dealer". Replaced oil pump seals. Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement. Most of my driving is highway driving with light weekend traffic. Took the vehicle in to dealer at for oil change and asked them to figure out why the car was having trouble climbing hills.
They said they reset the transmission settings because there were no codes. I got a second opinion that appear". Nine months ago at while driving on highway car stopped, Toyota had to replace the transmission. This makes me less confident with the third transmission and dealer could not diagnose the problem". Dealer said gear defect which had since been redesigned for newer models.
Covered under 60, mile warranty by miles. Replaced no charge". Took 4 days to locate part and repair leak. Done under warranty at no cost to me".
Took gamble and replaced expensive aux battery and problem went". Therefore all steering and electricals failed. Had it towed to dealer. Tow truck because of steepness of drive and the limited towing option, damaged the back wheel axle in the process.
This in turn caused a serious follow-on problem. Radiator, cooling fan, antifreeze leaks, water pump, thermostat, overheating.
It was repaired under warranty". Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission. Changed transmission fluid and found some metal shaving and fluid was dark color". Very minor problem but expensive to fix". Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks. Dealer took it off. I asked about a replacement part, service person said they don't usually replace them.
He said that they are not really necessary. I asked if the new models had heat shields on them. The answer was yes. I had to insist that they replace it. Dealership had trouble diagnosing until I contacted Toyota. It was then diagnosed. Cruise control, clock, warning lights, body control module, keyless entry, wiper motor or washer, tire pressure monitor, interior or exterior lights, horn, gauges, 12V power plug, remote engine start, alarm or security system.
Replaced battery, but problem persisted Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt. All harnesses needed to be replaced and one head".
