In any case, if you want to set yourself up for success, go for light, flat, and flexible shoes like moccasins or soft sneakers. Right off the bat, we have to talk about why your breathing technique is the most crucial part of any covert mission.
Even if you try taking shallow breaths , your chances of discovery may still be pretty high. At worst, you may faint or lose consciousness ,which would most certainly result in some noise. I recommend inhaling as you lift your foot and exhaling as you put it down. That rhythm should help you relax and stay centered , which is also why most martial arts experts recommend it. Just make sure your nose is completely clear before you start creeping around.
You could step on a toy, hit the edge of a coffee table, or trip over the curled edge of a carpet. Howling in pain is a surefire way to draw unwanted attention to your plans. Each of these circumstances would require a different walking style, for one. To avoid that, you simply have to lift your feet high enough to pass over all obstacles without touching them. This tip will help you work your way around scattered toys and curled carpets as well as rocks and shrubbery.
Avoid any twigs and dry foliage, and try to find rocks or tree roots that can hold your weight. In the course of a normal day, most people step heel first , then roll to the front of the foot. Many martial arts emphasize this style of walking, as demonstrated in this video. The key to this style is in making small, intentional movements while keeping a low center of gravity. Keep most of your weight on one leg while feeling around for a sturdy spot to place your toes.
Press the ball of your foot into the ground consciously, rolling from the outside in. Bring down your heel, then slowly shift weight to that foot. Be prepared to lift and shift whenever you feel any obstacle that might snap or crackle under your weight. Map your steps. Go slow. When looking for game, take three to four slow steps and stop.
How slow? Three steps should take you at least 20 seconds. Hide your noise. Mask the noise of footfalls by moving whenever other sounds can muffle your own. Wind in the trees, moving water, and even airplane noise can all hide the sound of a human on the hunt. Like this: Like Loading Happy Tracking. Lyta's story, my 1. Even if you read me last week, you may wonder--I […]. Deutscher has done a scholarly, thorough discussion on the roots of language, but I believe he started too late in time. I'm of the persuasion that language involves more than the spoken word. I […]. Even though bipedalism preceded big brains, and we couldn't be who we are […].
Leakey name: Jacqui average rating: 3. When walking quietly keep your eyes focused on the floor, pay careful attention to any and every obstacle no matter how small as even treading on a small leaf can make significant noise.
Take care to avoid going near anything which may make serious noise. If you see a big pile of small twigs or autumnal leaves then walk around them rather than through them. If you are walking around indoors then take care to avoid walking on hard uncovered surfaces such as a tiled or wooden floor as vibrations travel very easily through them.
Instead, where possible walk on parts of the floor that are carpeted or covered with a nice sound absorbing rug. If you're walking through a forest then making sure you are spatially aware is very important. Just brushing lightly past a bush can make significant noise depending on the seasons autumnal leaves tend to be the noisiest and the fabrics you are wearing.
If you are trying to walk quietly through a room make sure you are aware of where furniture is, where items on the floor are and make sure to steer clear of them. Waterproof jackets or other stiff clothes have a tendency to rub and make swishing noises as you walk. Wearing soft clothes made from cotton helps to eradicate fabric noise and prevents your clothing from giving you away.
Something you might notice as you stop staring at your feet and practicing keeping your eyes up is that without your visual sense staring at your feet, you feel very uncoordinated. I shared this exercise in more depth in my article about stalking animals. I already alluded to this when we talked about keeping your senses up. A big part of being able to walk silently in the woods starts with having a strategic understanding of the landscape.
Or take a route through the pines? The pines are a much better route simply because the substrate is naturally easier to walk silently on. Each step you make is a decision point. The full implications of where you choose to step might not fully manifest for another feet ahead of you.
It just comes from practice. Birds are such great teachers of awareness because they are a living, breathing, sensing part of the forest watching your every move. The same is true for most songbirds that spend any amount of time on the ground. They all have alarm calls that can betray your location in the blink of an eye. This is an advanced ninja skill. Pay attention to sounds like wind, rain, or flowing water, even noisy bird sounds.
You can use these sounds to very effectively mask your own noise. Cats take a few steps then pause, look, listen before taking a few more steps. It also enables you to take advantage of sound shadows like blowing gusts of wind, or momentary outbursts from territorial birds.
I would encourage you to practice blindfolding yourself… or even to go out at night sometime. Blindfolding completely removes the element of sight. Rest assured it is absolutely possible to walk silently and even navigate long distances through the forest completely without your sense of sight.
