You'll be glad you did. Shaving scrapes natural oils off your face, so the next most important item is some sort of shaving gel to keep your skin from becoming too dry and reduce friction from the razor. Pick a gel you think sounds good and give it a try. If you choose a mentholated shaving gel, be aware that menthol can sometimes cause a slight reaction with some types of skin and may result in red blotches. If this happens to you, don't worry. Just switch to a non-mentholated shaving cream.
Cuts and nicks are a part of shaving. They won't happen to you every time, but they will happen. When you nick or cut yourself, be sure to grab a clean tissue or cloth and apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding. If you've got a zit or a cut right in the middle of the area you're going to shave, it's a good idea to drop the standard razor for a while and use an electric razor or give shaving a break altogether for a few days.
Also, some guys might get ingrown hairs after shaving, in which the hair grows back into the skin. It can pierce the hair follicle, which in turn causes razor bumps.
Called folliculitis , this condition can sometimes be handled by using a special safety razor, but this doesn't always work for every guy. If you experience folliculitis, talk to a dermatologist about the best way to remove your beard and moustache. Before you begin, be sure to remember to rinse your razor after every few strokes. That way, the razor is cleared of any shaving cream or hair that might clog it up. Also, because the hair on different parts of your face grows in different directions, always try to shave in the direction your hair is growing shaving against the direction your hair is growing can cause razor burn, redness, and rashes.
No need to shout. Been doing it for years I'd peel my face off if I shaved against the grain. After I'm done shaving, my skin no longer feels like my ass. Wasn't that what the point of hot shaving foam was, to open up the pores on your face and relax your skin? So wait, if I were to shave in the shower, I would not need shaving cream then? Did I read that wrong? Who the fuck invented shaving anyways? I mean, common, i can't even fathom sitting there one day and thinking to myself "hey, it's be really keen to take this chunk of really sharp metal and scrape my fucking face off!!!
Personal grooming scemes are as varied and as diverse as there are groups of people on this planet. I have heard that traditional aftershave is bad for you. Alcohol dries the skins.
Showering and shaving is the easiest and the best way to shave. I personally no longer use aftershave. If you want to smell good any cologne will do after shaving and there is nothing "special" about traditional alcohol-based aftershaves. There are new types of aftershave lotions; but frankly a cheap bottle of facial moisturizer can do the trick. I have heard that sceptic pencils are the best way to stop nicks and cuts. Especially if you shave and shower. The only thing about shaving that you must be careful of is the risk of infection.
I too shave in the shower. And no, I never used shaving cream or shaving gel. I just used whatever soap or shampoo was available. I'd usually go with the grain initially. Anything that felt particularly rough afterwards run over again going against the grain. But lately I've stopped shaving altogether. Growing a healthy beard. It's not that bad looking either.
And conforms to my lazy nature quite nicely. Another big problem that can come from cuts are ingrown hairs. I had a nasty one on the thin skin on my kneck that quickly grew to the size of a grape before I did anything about it I've got a rogue hair or two growing pretty far down.
I realized it wasn't going to heal on its own so I went to the family physician and got it lanced. After that a swab dipped in H2O2 was jammed in the hole. I nearly passed out when he did that. He let off me for a coulple minutes and did it again!
