Laticrete or Mapei Ultraflex As long as the floor is bare concrete Too many variables to answer the last question. I would go with a medium bed thinset. Get one for marble and granite installs. Paul, I'll add to Brian and Scott's advice that you should wipe the backs of each tile with a clean sponge before applying the medium-bed mortar. Slate can be an "oily" and dirty stone and wiping the backs will provide for a better bonding surface.

Learning Center Find the answers to your home improvement questions. What is slate? What do both sides of the slate look like? How much does the thickness of slate tile vary? How much extra material should be considered for installation? This material interferes with the bond between the slate and the grout, so make sure it doesn't drip onto the edges of the slate.
Grouting the slate is perhaps the hardest part of the job. By this time, you may have grown impatient to get the work finished. If you cut corners here, you'll regret it.
The uneven cleft texture that imparts much of the beauty of slate is a demon when it comes to grouting. The sanded grout and grout paste sticks to these micro ridges in the slate like bubble gum in your hair.
The silica sand in the grout creates a miniature concrete mix. You can ruin the strength of the grout if you add too much water when you blend it, and also if you use too much water as you sponge the grout off the top of the slate. Before you decide on which slate to use, look at all the available colors. Black slate is stunningly beautiful, as is green slate. My personal favorite happens to be red slate.
The red hue is typically a deep, earthy red that transforms a room with its rich character. Selecting a color for a project like this can be stressful. After all, once the floor is down it's permanent. One method that has worked well for me for years is to make test panels. You can buy small amounts of slate of different colors and quickly attach them to thin pieces of plywood.
Too dry and it may not cure properly in the sun outdoors. Use this mixture for patio, pool deck, stair or wall installations of the slate. Every tile installation starts with a dry fit, and slate is no exception. Lay the tiles right where you plan to install them without any mortar. This allows you to arrange the pattern of the slate and also to sort it. Mix the slate tiles from several boxes to get a pleasing color mixture. Many slate tiles can be installed with either side up; flip the tiles over if you do not like the color on one side.
Slate tiles are often not even in thickness; play around with placing thin tiles next to thin tiles and thick tiles next to thick tiles. Tiles that are too thick or thin or that are thick on one edge and thin on the other can be used as cut tiles on the perimeter. If you are installing on the patio, pool deck or another ground application, it helps to lay the tiles out, then pick them up one at a time to lay the mortar.
