When David defeated the gigantic Goliath in the Ellah valley, he managed to do it only with his sling and one of the five stones he carried with him. When Goliath fell, David took his huge, heavy sword and cut his head off. They were oppressed by the Philistines who did not allow smiths in Israel, so they did not have any swords or spears, except for Saul and his son Jonathan.
They even had to go to the Philistine forts in order to sharpen the ploughshares, axes, and sickles. When Saul died in battle against the Philistines, his enemies cut his head off and took his armour to the temple of Astarte or Dagon. Ahimelech, the high priest, officiated there. David thought about taking refuge at the house of that servant of the Lord.

Improve this answer. From verse 9 it sure doesn't look like David knew at all that Goliath's, or any, sword was there! Interesting answer. Maybe David really didn't know that Goliath's sword was in the sanctuary and it was a sign of God faithfulness that he encountered exactly the sword of Goliath there.

After he ate, he requested a sword. Ahimelech the high priest gave him the only one he had, which is the one used by Goliath 1Samuel - 9. But what would a sword be doing in the possession of one of God's priests? The Bible says Ahimelech retrieved it, wrapped in cloth, from behind the ephod. It had become a sacred national possession for Israel. We can well guess that the spear also had the same honor. Could Goliath's sword and spear still exist to this day?
Some students of the Bible are familiar with the fact that a large portion of the Israelite tribe of Dan had migrated through Europe after captivity and into what is now Ireland. In the 11th edition of Encyclopedia Britannica in an article on Ireland, under the subheading of "Legendary Origins, Early History" we find a people called the "Tuatha de Danan" tribe of Dan had migrated into Ireland having with them the Stone of Destiny called the Lia Fail or Jacob's pillar stone.
There were also other things, possibly owned at one time by Goliath, transported to Ireland. The king's daughters Jeremiah ; , princesses, and descendants of the house of David also made the journey.
It is through them that God would keep his promise to always have one of David's descendants on a throne over Israel. The article also mentions Scythian warriors migrating to Ireland.
