This was the PG-version of DX which meant their pranks were a bit more juvenile than fans were used to.
Hornswoggle had a solid WWE career before his release. Billy Gunn's storied run in WWE saw him involved in quite a few different characters changes. They were the perfect tag team to align with D-Generation X when the group needed new members. Gunn was a valued member and often had the last word in the group's promos.
Road Dogg still works for the company today as a WWE producer and was a huge part of the Hall of Fame induction speech. X-Pac had a long career in the wrestling business, but most think back to his time in D-Generation X as the most successful.
X-Pac replaced Shawn Michaels, who left a huge hole that could have doomed the group; luckily, X-Pac was a tremendous new sidekick to Triple H. The late Rick Rude was a forgotten member of D-Generation X's first iteration when the faction operated as heels. Rude initially served as the insurance policy to help Shawn Michaels win matches.
DX was formed and Rude became a member by association. Several factions of the Horsemen failed too. Their success can be attributed to the way they adapted to the times and the way they interacted with the fans. The Horsemen did as they wished. While the fans were important, they were more concerned with themselves. DX happened when a change was needed in wrestling—a new flow of characters and something the fans could root for.
Their gimmick was that of a group of rebels who did and said what they wanted, no matter how provocative. DX is generally considered one of the most popular stables in pro wrestling history. After its original run, the group underwent several roster changes. D-Generation X was formed during the genesis of what would become the WWF's highly successful "Attitude Era" in the later half of Real-life friends and reported Clique members Shawn Michaels and Hunter Hearst Helmsley who began being known simply as Triple H were the original two members, along with Helmsley's bodyguard, Chyna and Michaels' "insurance policy," Rick Rude.
Triple H and Michaels immediately united together after Michaels turned heel after hitting The Undertaker with a chair at SummerSlam On October 13 , , the group officially referred to themselves as Degeneration X for the first time and debuted their signature slogan, "Suck it! Their trademark "crotch chops" became one of the most popular gestures in wrestling while their "D-Generation X" T-shirts enjoyed considerable sales. On-screen , however, the name was taken from Bret Hart who claimed that Shawn Michaels and Triple H were nothing more than degenerates.
This feud ended at Survivor Series in the infamous Montreal Screwjob which led to Bret leaving the company along with two of the remaining three members of the Foundation.
Michaels, who would take a long hiatus due to a real-life injury, was now out of DX. This incarnation of DX became extremely popular and eventually turned face. During this time, they were involved in several storylines and skits - including a feud with rival faction Nation of Domination and The Corporation. DX parodied the Nation and The Corporation where they dressed as the members of the respective factions and impersonated their characteristic mannerisms. They also made a video package where they "raided" Atlanta, the home of WCW.
They made it to the front gate of the Norfolk Scope arena, but were barred entry. Another incident almost caused a lawsuit when DX told people in line for Nitro tickets that the show was for free, and that they should leave. This incarnation of the faction lasted about a year.
